Look at what the notion of self reliance has done to the Clune family. Their survival is in danger, and they're too proud to ask for help. The Glenns know this, and they want them to admit that they're helpless. I'd say this is a cruel, negative side to this American value.
At the same time, the Clune kids speak ill of the Glenn family for forsaking them. I wonder if they are learning the aspect of self reliance.
